Being a recruitment agency we speak to candidates looking for new opportunities every day. So we wanted to share the most common reasons why candidates want to quit their current job and look for a new one.
Hopefully this article will help you as an employer to keep an eye on the major factors to ensure you can retain your best talent...
1. Unapproachable manager
Working with a manager who is unapproachable can really impact job satisfaction, career progression and professional development, as employees feel they can’t ask for help, advice or discuss how they can improve and progress. After a while this wears thin and ultimately leaves an employee feeling alone, unsupported and undervalued. So it’s no surprises that this is one of the most common reasons why people look to move way.
2. Underpaid
No surprises that this is a common reason for employees wanting to move jobs. However, before we start working with candidates and helping them find a new opportunity we always make sure they have had a conversation with their manager to see if their salary can be increased as this is always the obvious counter offer.
3. Limited development opportunities
Learning is a key ingredient to any successful career, and when the opportunity to learn stops this is when employees start to get nervous that they aren’t progressing and developing and feel it will harm their long-term career.
4. False promises
By this we mean when employees are promised a salary review within a certain timeframe and it doesn’t happen, or they have been told that they will be offered progression and development opportunities but those opportunities never arrive. Trust is a huge factor in any relationship and when that trust is lost between employee and manager, due to broken promises, it’s very hard to ever regain it back again. So it’s no coincidence that being sold false promises is a common reason for employees wanting to quit their job.
5. Financial uncertainty
No doubt that this has become an even more important reason for people considering their options. But this is a very hot topic that candidates want to discuss. They want to make sure they work for a company that is financially secure and has a healthy pipeline of work, and you can’t blame them.
