Building Services Design Engineer - Rail Infrastructure
An opportunity for a Building Services Design Engineer to join a leading rail structural design consultancy. The successful candidate will possess a solid technical background ideally in both mechanical and electrical building services design, with a strong understanding of how these systems are installed and integrated into rail and structural projects.


In this role, you will be responsible for designing and overseeing the installation of various building services systems including HVAC, electrical systems, fire protection, CCTV, and public health systems. You will work on large-scale rail infrastructure projects, ensuring efficient and practical solutions that meet project requirements and industry standards.

The company has offices in Guilford, Blackfriars, Manchester, Glasgow and Colwyn Bay. This role offers nationwide flexibility, with minimal office presence required. You will have the opportunity to work remotely, with occasional site visits as needed. The bulk of the projects are based in London however the team are based across the Country. 


The key responsibilities for this Building Services Design Engineer role are:

  • Perform HVAC and mechanical design calculations, including for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and public health services (e.g., toilets, water-based pumpsets).
  • Conduct electrical design calculations for power distribution, lighting, fire alarms, CCTV, and public address systems in rail and structural environments.
  • Undertake BS 7671 electrical calculations, ensuring designs comply with industry regulations and standards.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of how building services systems are practically installed in rail and structural projects, with a focus on station refurbishments and upgrades.
  • Design and calculate systems while factoring in the practicalities of installation, from HVAC to mechanical and electrical components.
  • Utilize design software such as Trimble, Revit, Dialux, Relux, and AutoCAD for producing designs and performing calculations.
  • Focus on station refurbishments and upgrades, understanding the unique challenges and requirements of rail infrastructure projects.
  • Design systems that integrate into rail and structural projects, including CCTV, fire protection, public address, and lighting.
  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams, including architects, structural engineers, and contractors, to ensure designs are implemented accurately and efficiently.
  • Support the team in the application of Contract Requirement Technology (CRT) and bring forward technical scopes as needed.
  • Understand and translate client requirements into functional designs, ensuring satisfaction and timely delivery.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant regulations, codes, and standards (e.g., Building Regulations, BS 7671, CIBSE, Health & Safety).
  • Stay up to date with industry regulations and best practices, ensuring designs meet both legislative and client-specific requirements.
  • Identify potential risks in design and installation processes and proactively develop solutions to mitigate these risks.
  • Prepare and deliver technical reports, specifications, and design documentation for both internal teams and clients.

Experience required for this Building Services Design Engineer role are:

  • Strong experience in Building Services Design, particularly in the context of rail and structural projects, such as station refurbishments and upgrades.
  • Mechanical-biased candidates should have expertise in HVAC, air conditioning, heating, ventilation, public health systems, and water-based pumpsets.
  • Electrical-biased candidates should have experience in electrical systems design, including power, lighting, fire alarms, CCTV, and public address systems.
  • Proficiency in Trimble, Revit, Dialux, Relux, AutoCAD, and other relevant software tools.
  • Knowledge and experience in performing BS 7671 electrical calculations and complying with industry standards.
  • Experience with rail and structural projects, especially station refurbishments and upgrades.
  • Understanding of installation processes and practical considerations for building services systems in rail and infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with rail-related systems such as CIS, fire safety, CCTV, public address, and lighting.

Desirable knowledge, skills & experience for this Building Services Design Engineer role are:

  • Experience working with Contract Requirement Technology (CRT), helping to advance technical scopes within projects.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities with an emphasis on both design and installation processes.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to collaborate across disciplines and teams.
