STE2 Reviewing Engineer

The key responsibilities for this STE2 Reviewing Engineer role are:
- Review engineering drawings, plans, and specifications related to rail infrastructure projects (including tracks, stations, signaling systems, etc.), ensuring compliance with safety regulations and design standards.
- Monitor and assess the implementation of engineering work against the project's design documentation and safety requirements. Ensure compliance with national and international railway standards and industry regulations (e.g., RINA, RISQS).
- Perform risk assessments and safety checks to ensure that any potential safety or operational issues are identified and mitigated. Provide technical recommendations and corrective actions as needed.
- Maintain detailed records of review findings, approval statuses, and engineering assessments. Produce comprehensive reports for internal teams and external stakeholders, detailing the status of projects and highlighting any areas requiring attention.
- Work closely with other engineering teams, contractors, and external regulatory bodies to ensure that all project milestones are met in a timely manner and that any design or safety concerns are promptly addressed.
- Participate in audits, inspections, and field reviews to verify that project deliverables meet quality and safety expectations. Review contractors' quality documentation and ensure corrective actions are taken when required.
- Conduct detailed reviews of railway infrastructure, including bridges, retaining walls, culverts, viaducts, and ancillary assets.
- Ensure that all assets are safe, meet regulatory standards, and are in good condition for use by passengers and freight services.
- Interpret inspection findings, identify defects or areas requiring attention, and produce high-quality reports detailing the condition of structures and recommended remedial actions. Make engineering decisions based on structural conditions and deterioration rates, considering environmental and causal factors.
- Provide expert recommendations for maintenance and repair works, ensuring safety, efficiency, and compliance with relevant standards. Oversee the development of long-term asset management strategies.
- Mentor and guide the existing and growing examinations team. Share technical expertise to develop their skills, ensuring high standards of inspection, reporting, and decision-making across the team.
- Ensure all activities adhere to Network Rail's technical standards and best practices, maintaining consistency in asset management across the region.
- Take responsibility for your recommendations and decisions, ensuring they are based on solid engineering judgment and industry best practices.
Experience required for this STE2 Reviewing Engineer role are:
- STE2 Reviewing Engineer competency.
- A Civil Engineering degree or equivalent.
- Experience in inspecting and assessing railway structures including bridges, viaducts, retaining walls and culverts.
- Proficiency in examination and inspection techniques for evaluating the condition of railway infrastructure.
- Ability to identify defects and assess the deterioration rate of structures, considering environmental and causal factors.
- Familiarity with Network Rail's technical standards, safety regulations, and compliance requirements for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of railway infrastructure.
- Evidence of training and mentoring staff in technical aspects of an engineering role.
- Ideally having experience in masonry, metallic, concrete and timber structures.
