Structural Design Surveyor
I have an opportunity to join an engineering design consultancy that specialises in civil and structural design works across Rail and Highways. Managing projects through inception to business case, to planning, right through to implementation and handover. Their services stretch across both the public and private sectors, and for large and small organisations.
They are looking for a Structural Design Surveyor who has a strong background with ST4, ST5 and ST6 to join their South team, this can be based in their Guilford or London Blackfriars offices. You will be responsible for conducting structural surveys and assessments on rail infrastructure, ensuring that all structures (such as bridges, tunnels, embankments, and viaducts) are safe, sound, and compliant with relevant standards.
Salary range dependent on level of experience.
The key requirements for this Structural Design Surveyor role are:
- Conduct detailed structural surveys for rail infrastructure, including bridges, embankments, tunnels, and station buildings.
- Produce comprehensive survey reports and provide assessments of existing rail structures in line with industry standards.
- Develop structural designs for rail infrastructure projects, ensuring that all designs comply with ST4, ST5, and ST6 standards. Knowledge of ST3 standards would also be desirable.
- Collaborate with engineers to produce detailed designs and drawings for rail-related projects, such as track alignments, foundations, and drainage systems.
- Ensure that all design work adheres to the relevant network rail standards and other applicable codes of practice, including environmental, health and safety, and sustainability regulations.
- Work closely with senior engineers, project managers, and other stakeholders, providing input to project designs and specifications.
- Communicate effectively with clients, contractors, and other external parties to provide progress updates and resolve issues.
- Perform risk assessments on proposed designs and ensure that mitigation measures are incorporated into the design process.
- Identify and address any potential safety hazards associated with rail infrastructure and provide innovative solutions.
- Provide technical advice and support to clients and internal teams, ensuring clear documentation of design solutions.
- Support the management of rail infrastructure projects by assisting with cost estimation, timelines, and resource allocation.
- Monitor project progress, ensuring that all designs and surveys are completed on time and within budget.
Experience and skills required for this Structural Design Surveyor role are:
A degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent experience).
Chartered status or working towards it.
Proven experience (typically 3+ years) in structural surveying and design within the rail sector, especially in the design of railway infrastructure.
Strong experience working with ST4, ST5, ST6 (Railway Standards) and familiar with Network Rail design and operational requirements. Experience working with ST3 would also be desirable.
Demonstrated experience in preparing structural reports, design calculations, and technical documentation.
Strong technical understanding of structural design principles, including knowledge of concrete, steel, timber, and composite materials.
Excellent understanding of health, safety, and environmental regulations within rail infrastructure.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
