STE6 Tunnel Engineer
An opportunity to join an established consultancy firm specializing in rail infrastructure, safety, and engineering services across the UK.
The role involves working on major rail tunnel projects, ensuring compliance with safety and engineering standards, and managing the technical aspects of tunnel design, construction, and maintenance.
The key requirements for this STE2 Tunnel Engineer role are:
- Lead the design and analysis of tunnel structures, including determining the appropriate engineering solutions for tunneling techniques, materials, and equipment.
- Ensure designs comply with railway industry standards and regulations.
- Manage and monitor the construction of rail tunnels, ensuring the project meets design specifications, safety standards, and timelines.
- Provide technical guidance and support to contractors and site teams.
- Conduct thorough inspections of existing rail tunnels, assess the condition of tunnel structures, and recommend repairs, maintenance, or upgrades. Interpret inspection data and prepare detailed reports for stakeholders.
- Perform risk assessments related to tunnel projects, ensuring that potential hazards (e.g., ground conditions, water ingress, ventilation issues) are identified and mitigated.
- Monitor safety compliance during construction and ongoing operations.
- Work closely with other engineering teams, Network Rail, contractors, and regulatory bodies to ensure smooth execution of tunnel projects.
- Oversee the development and implementation of maintenance plans for railway tunnels.
- Assess the long-term health and sustainability of tunnel structures and provide expert advice on asset management strategies.
- Provide leadership and mentoring to junior engineers, sharing technical expertise and fostering a culture of excellence in tunnel engineering and safety practices.
- Ensure all work complies with Network Rail's standards, relevant health and safety regulations, and other industry requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, design changes, and safety audits.
- Act as a role model and technical leader, developing the next generation of tunnel engineers and ensuring the continual improvement of engineering standards across the team.
Experience and skills required for this STE6 Tunnel Engineer role are:
- STE6 competency
- PTS
- Strong understanding of tunneling techniques, materials, and geotechnical considerations.
- Experience with tunnel inspections, maintenance, and safety regulations.
- Familiarity with Network Rail's technical standards and compliance requirements.
- Proven ability to lead and manage complex engineering projects, with a focus on safety and risk mitigation.
- Previous experience in mentoring or managing a team of engineers is desirable.
